Where do copy unicorns come from?

And other things you might want to know about me

I was born in Queens, NY, and grew up on Long Island. As a kid, I was fascinated by science, in particular astronomy, meteorology, and biology. And I always loved to write. In my younger years, I'd fill notebooks with stories and exchange long letters with my grandmother (herself a brilliant writer and storyteller). As a teen I found a niche writing poetry and working on my high school's literary magazine. I was named a regional winner of the Live Poets Society's American High School Poets in 2001.

It wasn't until I was in college at Penn State University that I considered pursuing my interests in science and writing together. I joined PSU's award-winning student-run newspaper as a staff writer and later became the Science & Health editor. A feature I wrote about a Penn State astrophysicist's research on quasars got me selected as a national finalist for a Mark of Excellence award from the Society of Professional Journalists.

After graduating with a degree in journalism and an honors thesis in science writing, I had a brief (and, if I'm being honest, boring) stint in publishing. Then, in 2006, an acquaintance of mine in pharmaceutical advertising had the notion to introduce me to a few of his co-workers—a welcoming crowd of fellow creative geeks. My people.

Nearly 20 years later, I've worked with numerous agencies, in both full-time and freelance roles, and have experience in a range of categories. I'm still fascinated by science, and I still love writing.

These days I primarily work remotely from my house in upstate NY—a pandemic move that turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life. I do commute a couple times a month to Brooklyn, where I maintain an office and get my Q2W dose of urban energy and culture. I'm happy to accommodate in-person meetings, schedule permitting.

The rest of the time, you can typically find me hiking, swimming, paddling, adding to my Merlin life list (IYKYK), doing Pilates, working on personal writing projects, or chasing after my dog, Maddie.
